Debian 9 Stretch Desktop Installation & Update with Terminal


Recommended configuration : Intel Dual Core or better / 2GB Memory / 20GB Hard disk
To do the installation of Debian you have to download first the *.iso file.
This download is possible in Debian website. It's free and Open Source.

To create your hard disk partition before check Gparted Partition creation

Boot your computer with your CD/DVD or USB Key, select "Graphical install" and click on "Enter".

 

Choose your "Language". I do the installation in English but he is possible to choose Khmer language
if you prefer. Be careful, with Khmer language some menu titles are not well understood.
It is also possible to install a second language after installation. Then click on "Continue".

Select your "Location". For Cambodia, select "Other" "Asia" "Cambodia" and click on "Continue".
Select your "Locale settings" (United States for standard) and click on "Continue".

Select "American English" for your Keyboard and click on "Continue".

Wait few seconds.

Choose your "Computer Name" (Host name) as "cambodia-computer" and click on "Continue".

Click "Continue" except if you have a "Domain Name" as "cambodia-computer.com".

Put a "Password" and confirm it for your administrator (root) account and click on "Continue".
He is important to choice a good password.
The minimum requirement is : 10 characters with 2 numbers and 2 special characters.

Choose a "User Name" and click on "Continue".

Put a "Password" and confirm it for your user account and click on "Continue".

Select "Manual" to create your disk partition and click on "Continue".

Select your "Hard disk" and click on "Continue".

Select "Yes" to create the partition table and click on "Continue".

Select the free "Hard Disk Space" and click on "Continue".



Select "Create a new Partition" and click on "Continue".
Choose the size in gigabyte (GB) and click on "Continue"
(Minimum 20 GB for the Operating System). Select "Primary Partition" and click on "Continue"
(Logical in the case you have already three primary partition).
Select "Beginning" and click on "Continue".

Select "Done setting up the partition" and click on "Continue".

Select the free "Hard Disk Space" and click on "Continue".



Select "Create a new Partition" and click on "Continue".
Choose the size in gigabyte (GB) and click on "Continue"
(It's your "Home" partition where you put your data).
Select "Primary Partition" and click on "Continue"
(Logical in the case you have already three primary partition).
Select "Beginning" and click on "Continue".

Select "Done setting up the partition" and click on "Continue".

Select the free "Hard Disk Space" and click on "Continue".



Select "Create a new Partition" and click on "Continue".
Choose the size in gigabyte (GB) and click on "Continue"
(It's your "Swap" partition for memory management - 2 or 4 GB is perfect).
Select "Primary Partition" and click on "Continue"
(Logical in the case you have already three primary partition). Select "Use as".

Select "Swap area" (Memory area) and click on "Continue".

Select "Done setting up the partition" and click on "Continue".


Select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk" and click on "Continue".
Select "Yes" to write the changes to the hard disk and click on "Continue".


Wait a few minutes.


Select "No" except if you have another CD/DVD with extra sources and click on "Continue".
Select "No" except if you have another network mirror with extra sources and click on "Continue".

Select "No" and click on "Continue".

Select "Debian Desktop Environment" and "Standard System Utilities" then click on "Continue".
We don't create here a "Webserver" "Print Server" or a "SSH Server".
In "Debian Desktop Environment" you have others models if you want to test multiple
environment to choose one after
(Gnome, Xfce, KDE ...).


Wait around 20 minutes to 1 hour for the installation. This depends of your computer power.

 

Here is the "Grub Boot loader". This is used to create the computer "Boot Menu".
Select "Yes" to install it to the master boot record and click on "Continue".

Select the partition "/dev/sda" and click on "Continue".


The installation is finish. Click on "Continue" to reboot your computer.

This is your new "Boot Menu". If you have already a Microsoft Windows Operating System
he will appear in this list. Select "Debian" and click on "Enter" or wait few second.


Your system boot and you arrive to the "Login menu".

Type your "User Password" and click on "Sign In".

Your arrive to your Debian 9 Desktop environment.

In the "Top right" menu select the button "∇", "Setting" and "About".
Here you have your Operating System information : OS Version, Hardware configuration ...


In the menu "Activities" at the "Top Left" search "Terminal" then click on "Enter".
You are in "Command Line" inside the "Terminal" with your normal user account.
To do update you have to switch to the administrator account (root).
Type "su" and your "root password". You are "Administrator" (root) of your "Terminal".


To locate the "Sources" of updates we need to edit the configuration file.
"nano /etc/apt/sources.list"

Update your file with this content :
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free
deb-src  http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib non-free
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free
Select "Ctrl + X & Y" to save and exit.


To do the Update and Upgrade of your system software type "apt-get update" and after "apt-get upgrade".
The update time of your system depends on its version and your network bandwidth. 1 minute to many hours.

An another way to do this update faster is to write in one line the two commands with the confirmation.
"apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y"

After you finish to update your system software you have to update your Linux Operating System version :
"apt-get dist-upgrade"

To see all options about "apt-get" type "apt-get --help". Many commands are possible.

"apt-get autoremove" remove all products no longer useful.
"apt-get clean" and "apt-get purge" clean the update cache.

To install a specific software type "apt-get install nano".
"Nano" is an example of a product already installed. It's a text editor.

Your Linux Debian 9 Stretch Desktop is installed and up to date.
